lingua franca
A commonly understood language for the exchange of information.
For Mesopotamia the first lingua franca was Sumerian, later replaced by Akkadian, which then became the language of international communication throughout the Middle East.
In later times following Alexander's military successes Greek became the lingua franca of the Middle East and the Mediterranean region, later replaced by Latin as the lingua franca of the western Mediterranean and Europe..
